Flooring Contractor in Hartselle, AL

Hartselle is about 45 minutes south of our Huntsville base on I-65, a railroad town with a historic downtown just below Decatur. Its 1950s-through-70s brick ranches are the heart of our work here, and many still hide original oak strip floors under wall-to-wall carpet. We check what is under the carpet first, then refinish the oak or lay a new floor. Call (904) 533-7260.

Hartselle, AL

Oak under carpet in mid-century ranches

Hartselle grew up as a railroad town on the line south of Decatur, and its downtown still carries that history in its storefronts. For flooring, though, the story is in the neighborhoods that filled in during the postwar decades. Much of the city is 1950s-through-70s brick ranches, built in the era when oak strip flooring was standard before carpet took over.

That timing is the opportunity. Plenty of these mid-century ranches had their oak covered with wall-to-wall carpet in the 1970s or 80s and never uncovered since. Pull a corner of that carpet and there is a good chance solid oak strip is waiting underneath, dulled but intact. Refinishing it almost always costs less than new wood and keeps a warmth new flooring struggles to match.

The honest check is condition and thickness. Decades under carpet can leave tack-strip holes along the edges, stains near a window or a plumbing run, and boards that have been sanded before. We look at the wear layer and the overall shape before we promise a refinish, and where the oak is too far gone we talk through replacement. These ranches sit on a mix of slab and crawlspace, so we read moisture either way.

Where there is no wood to save, the mid-century layout still suits a clean carpet-to-LVP upgrade or new engineered hardwood through the main living areas.

A living-room floor install near Hartselle, AL

We reach Hartselle by heading south on I-65 from our Huntsville base, just past Decatur, and we work the ranch neighborhoods, the streets near the historic downtown, and the newer homes on the city’s edges. It is a longer drive than the close-in suburbs, so we plan the measure around it, and the visit is free wherever your home sits.

The signature Hartselle job starts by peeling back a carpet corner to see whether oak strip survived underneath. When it has, we refinish — dust-controlled sanding, stain samples, a durable finish — and bring a dated ranch back to life for less than new wood would cost. When the wood is gone or too thin, we install fresh LVP or engineered hardwood through the main level and keep carpet in the bedrooms if you like. We move furniture, haul off the old flooring, and fix any soft spot we find before the finish floor goes down.

“I cannot express enough how wonderful my experience was! They were professional and courteous through the whole process. All of my questions were answered as needed. They worked hard so that I could get to things I needed during construction. I have a dog, and they were very kind to her. By the end of the construction I felt as though they were family and my floors were fabulous! I will call on them again and would recommend them to my friends and family too.”

FAQ

Hartselle flooring FAQs

Often, yes. Many of Hartselle’s 1950s-through-70s brick ranches were built when oak strip flooring was standard, then had carpet laid over it in later decades. We can pull back a corner at the free measure to check. If solid oak is waiting underneath and the wear layer holds up, refinishing usually beats buying a new floor.
