Flooring Contractor in Athens, AL

Athens is about 35 minutes west of our Huntsville base on US-72, the Limestone County seat built around a classic courthouse square. The older homes near the courthouse square, Athens State University and the tree-lined historic districts often hide original hardwood under decades of carpet, and refinishing it usually beats replacement. We assess the wood first, then sand or install. Call (904) 533-7260.

Athens, AL

Historic homes around the courthouse square

Athens is the Limestone County seat, and its character sits in the streets around the courthouse square. The historic districts hold Victorian and Craftsman homes, many built before flooring came out of a factory, with original oak and pine laid board by board. A good number of those floors are still there, hidden under carpet or a tired old finish.

That flips the usual starting point. On most jobs here we are not picking out a new floor at all; we are deciding whether the wood already down can be revived. More often than not it can. Bringing that oak or pine back is mostly a matter of taking the surface down to clean wood, lifting out any plank too far gone, and sealing it so the grain the carpet hid finally shows.

What limits that is how much wood is left to work with. A plank taken down two or three times in its life can simply run out of material above the joint, so we gauge what remains and look the boards over before committing. When one is gone entirely, we source salvaged stock of the same species so the patch disappears into the floor around it.

Athens State University and the growth spilling west from Huntsville also bring newer homes and rentals into the mix. Those take the more familiar carpet-to-LVP and new-hardwood work, and the older homes near the square often sit on crawlspaces, so a look underneath for damp is part of the visit.

We serve Athens from our Huntsville shop, an easy run west on US-72, covering the neighborhoods around the courthouse square, the streets near Athens State University, and the newer subdivisions filling in toward the Limestone County line. The assessment visit is free wherever your home sits in town. US-72 runs right through the middle of town, so scheduling a measure is quick.

The job Athens is known to us for is reviving a buried oak or pine floor: pulling the carpet, gauging what can safely come off, running the sander with dust capture, trying stains on the actual boards, and sealing it hard. When the wood is past rescuing, we put down new flooring chosen to sit comfortably in an older home. In the newer parts of town it is the familiar carpet-to-LVP swap and fresh wood through the main level. Our habit is to rescue a floor that still has life in it rather than haul it out on reflex.

“I cannot express enough how wonderful my experience was! They were professional and courteous through the whole process. All of my questions were answered as needed. They worked hard so that I could get to things I needed during construction. I have a dog, and they were very kind to her. By the end of the construction I felt as though they were family and my floors were fabulous! I will call on them again and would recommend them to my friends and family too.”

FAQ

Athens flooring FAQs

Yes — it is the request we hear most in Athens. Many homes around the courthouse square and in the historic districts still have original oak or pine under carpet. We pull the covering, judge what the boards can take, run a dust-capturing sander, try stain colors on the wood itself, and seal it. More often than not a floor this old finishes up looking better than anything new.
